Aluminium Joining and Assembly
During the design stage of your aluminium extrusions, we will use our many years of experience to advise you on the most appropriate joining and assembly methods. By taking the assembly of your aluminium into consideration at this early stage, we can help you reduce assembly times and cost. Our expertise in aluminium assembly also means your aluminium products are correctly constructed and are robust and suited to your intended purpose.
When it comes to joining aluminium extrusions, there are three main options:
- Aluminium adhesives - Aluminium adhesives are used in almost every industry that uses aluminium products. As they do not require heat treatment and are lightweight, they allow for a wider range of design options and do not affect the properties of the aluminium alloy. Aluminium adhesives are often used to join aluminium components with other materials such as plastics. However, while aluminium adhesives can provide reliable joins, like all adhesives, they do weaken over time and can be affected by heat and other chemicals, so they are not suitable for all joints.
- Aluminium welding - As aluminium is a reactive metal, great care needs to be taken when welding aluminium joins. As experts in all aspects of aluminium extrusion design and production, we have highly skilled welders who will carefully prepare your aluminium components so that they are not damaged by the welding process. While welded aluminium joints are the strongest type of joints and can be used in more extreme temperatures, they also require significant preparation and are more expensive. The welding process can also distort the properties of the aluminium, especially on thin and complex shapes.
- Mechanical joins - We can implement a wide variety of mechanical joins, such as screws, rivets, snap-fit joints, hinges, T-joints, and telescoping into your extrusion designs. Strong, robust and reliable, mechanical joins allow for fast assembly times at low cost. However, mechanical joins can be heavy and are generally unsuitable for use with electronics as they have poor electromagnetic shielding.
Using our many years of experience in the aluminium industry, we will help you implement the most cost-effective and practical types of joins into your design. This will result in aluminium extrusions that are durable, suited to the intended purpose, and that can be assembled quickly.
